A steel eye bolt is screwed into a length of 20mm nylon rod

Nylon66 is a good material - strong and slightly flexible. The idea is to push it into the remains of the original spine where it will almost reach the neck, then screw it in place. The eyebolt inside the nylon was tested to over 100 kg.
